Did you know that ToBRFV can infect other plants besides tomato plants?

Tomato brown rugose fruit virus (ToBRFV) can cause damage in tomato, pepper and chilli crops. It is closely related to tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) and tomato mosaic virus (ToMV), all of which belong to the tobamovirus group. Interestingly, ToBRFV breaks existing resistances in tomatoes against TMV and ToMV. These tobamoviruses are highly infectious and spread easily by contact (mechanical). Moreover, they can infect young plants through seeds. Besides tomatoes, ToBRFV can also infect Petunia, black nightshade and Chenopodium species. Since 1 October 2019, ToBRFV has been classified as a (regulated) quarantine organism in the European Union and since the end of August 2020, there are strict requirements for seed lots regarding this virus.

Cybersecurity

Cybersecurity is more topical than ever. The protection of valuable company data is central. Hackers pose a real danger, especially in the world of advanced horticulture. During our event on 23 November 2023, we learned how to secure your valuable information. Hackers are not only looking for data for their own gain, but can also take down entire companies. Dutch horticulture is using more and more digital technologies, such as sensors, AI and robots. This also increases the risk of cyber incidents.

Cyber resilience checklist

If you can answer "yes" to all these statements, you are on the right track!

  • My e-mail does not appear on the website: https://haveibeenpwned.com
  • I and my employees use a password manager to track and store passwords
  • I don't write passwords on loose sheets
  • I am aware of what could happen if my IT and OT systems fail
  • I have hard-to-guess, different and strong passwords for my devices and company accounts
  • I use multi-factor authentication to log into my systems
  • I, and/or my supplier regularly check that the devices and software we use are up-to-date
  • I and my colleagues can distinguish phishing emails from regular emails and report phishing emails

Tips and tricks from BICT Group

One of our partners we are proud of is BICTGroep. They offer smart ICT solutions that work.

If you surf to a news website or watch the news, it is abundantly clear: companies, regardless of their size, possess valuable data that cybercriminals are all too keen to get their hands on. Reliable IT security is absolutely essential for worry-free operations. With the right security solutions and BICT Group's expertise, Tomatoworld has effective protection against various threats, such as ransomware, targeted attacks, data breaches and fileless attacks. Thanks to two-step authentication and data encryption, advanced protection is provided, ensuring compliance with legal data protection regulations and standards for our company's data and systems.

Some quotes from BICT: "The user is the most important link of all" and "People determine whether technology can work" come out of their mouths.

Fight labour shortages by deploying robotics

The horticulture industry faces an annual loss of 1.5 billion due to labour shortages, according to CBS, with implications for revenue and crop quality. The challenges arise from the high cost and limited availability of skilled labour, coupled with the physically demanding nature of horticultural tasks. To address this multifaceted issue and meet the growing demand for high-quality crops, Bosman Van Zaal is introducing robotics.

In a pioneering effort to combat labour shortages and improve the quality and quantity of crop yields, Bosman Van Zaal is leveraging its expertise in automation with the Crea-Tech brand. Since 1998, the company has been at the forefront of automating upstream and downstream processes for growers worldwide.

Automating processes
We have been successfully providing automated packaging solutions for horticulture for more than 20 years. That is why we dare to say that we are the packaging specialist. A good example of one such process that we can automate with robotics is label placement. Our Six Pack Handle Placer automatically places labels as handles on six-packs, saving 2 FTEs, with a payback period of 2.5 years.

Whitepaper
Bosman Van Zaal's commitment to overcoming labour and quality issues is summarised in a comprehensive whitepaper outlining the transformational benefits of robotics in horticulture. The whitepaper sheds light on how robotics can reduce inconsistencies, contamination risks, product losses and resource wastage associated with manual labour. For more information on how robotics can revolutionise your horticultural operations, please visit Bosman Van Zaal's website and download the whitepaper.
